This means the child is reading too slowly, or is reading words incorrectly, or losing his place, or not getting much meaning.
Tip: quit stopping to sound out when your child is reading to you. Tell your child any unknown words and ask your child to keep reading onward. This method will build a better connection to good comprehension.
How to improve your child's reading success using "No More Stopping to Sound Out."
You say: The job of reading is to "get the meaning." Let me show you how to get the meaning. We are going to read one paragraph at a time (or the whole page when there are not very many words.) You point to the 1st word and the last word in the paragraph - your child may not know what a paragraph is.
1) Tell the child to read the words he knows in the paragraph, slide over unrecognized words, and continue reading onward.
2) Now, talk about what is happening in the paragraph - and story - then use the gathered meaning of the paragraph and story to go back and try to figure out the unrecognised words by using the letters in the words. Many words cannot be figured out - tell your child the word after a couple of attempts.
Parent - this will be slow at first, but it will work. Please be quiet and patient. You and your child will love the power of your child's brain.
Your child has tons of words in his brain's "word bank" but he does not yet recognize those words in print. He has heard words like fierce or catastrophe or adventure. After practicing the "no more stopping" method for a few days - your child's brain will start popping these harder words into place when your child keeps reading onward.
Later, in a different session, practice the child's weak reading skills. These weak skills will be: 1) confusing the shapes of b / d, and g, p, q; (Your child knows the sounds, confuses the shapes.)
2) the rule that letter teams ce, ci, cy always say s as in princess, decide, bicycle, etc.
3) that teams ge, gi, gy often say j - as in giant - and so on. (Use the search box at the top of this blog to find -- ce, ci or ge, gi or silent gh or confusing b and d or whatever reading topic you think will help your child.)
Think about getting my book for your child's grade level. If your child will not work with you, ask Grandma to help or hire a personal tutor to teach my book.
I use ebay as my website. Search Instant Reading Help all my books will pop up. All are brand new and include my contact info; email or call for help. Thank you, Mary Maisner
